Welcome to Year 2!

We would like to give you all a very warm welcome to our class webpage! 

On this page you will find out what we will be learning about in class. We are going to have a very exciting year!

What we learn in Year 2:

Maths

This term in maths, we will be working on our number skills including place value and addition and subtraction and money.

Literacy (Talk for Writing)

In Literacy this term we will be exploring description through the story, 'The Papaya that Spoke'. This is a cumulative tale and we will be writing our own cumulative stories. Then we explore The Little Red Riding Hood.

In our non-fiction writing, we will be writing diaries from the point of view of the farmer from the story! Then we move on to writing newspaper reports about the Big Bad Wolf! 

Religious Education

This half term in RE we will be learning about 'beginnings'. We will explore the creation story and how new beginnings make us feel.

After this we will explore another faith: Judaism. We will focus on 'Shabbat' and find out lots about how Jewish people live their lives and pray. 

Our topic after half term will be signs and symbols. Here we will begin to explore the signs and symbols of Baptism.  

Before Christmas out topic is 'Preparations' and explores how we prepare for Christmas and the coming of baby Jesus. 

Science

In Science this term, we will be learning about animals including humans! We will explore human and animal life cycles and find out about basic needs for survival. We will also be making bird feeders to check on throughout our topic! 

We will be investigating famous scientists and their discoveries! 

History

In History this term, we will be learning about three nurturing nurses! Florence Nightingale, Mary Seacole and Edith Cavell. We will find out about their lives, where they fit on a timeline and why they have made history.

Information:

    PE

    • PE this year will be on a Wednesday and a Thursday.
    • Outdoor PE is on Thursday and indoor PE is on Wednesday.
    • Please come to school wearing appropriate PE kit on these days. Please ensure earrings are removed/covered and hair is tied back.

    Homework

    • Homework consists of three parts: reading, spelling and a maths task.
    • Reading: Please read daily with your child and record it in their reading record. This is checked every week and your child will be rewarded for regular reading. 
    • Reading books will be changed every Friday.
    • Spelling: New spellings will be given out every Friday for a spelling test the following Wednesday. 
    • Maths task: This is set on a Friday and is due in on Wednesday each week. 
    • This year your child will come home with a new homework book. 
    • In the homework book, please complete the maths task and spelling practise. 
    • Please return the completed homework in the homework book on a Wednesday.

    Strategies for Learning Spellings

    Handwriting in Class 2

    This is how each letter should be formed. We call the join going into the letter a 'launcher'. Your child does not need to join their handwriting yet, we will build up to this.
